USATF National Championship Article

Greensboro, NC   The week of July 23rd saw the athletes of the Florence Track Club take on the greatest competition in the nation – the USATF Jr. Olympic National Championships.   All fifteen athletes who qualified in the regional tournament participated in this final competition, with six of the athletes becoming ‘All Americans’ – placing in the top 8 in the nation.

Ellison Banner (7-8 female), who currently holds the state association record for 8&under girls javelin, received a medal for placing 2nd in the nation competing in the javelin with a throw of 17.97m received a medal. Banner also placed 11th in long jump with a jump of 3.15m and 32nd in 1500m run with a time of 7:12.92.

Caelin Sloan (13-14 female), current holder of the state association record for 13-14 girls 3000m racewalk, received a medal for placing 5th in the nation competing in 3000m racewalk with a time of 17:09.78.

Michael Griffin (17-18 male) received a medal for placing 6th in the nation competing in 2000m steeplechase with a time of 6:26.80. Griffin also placed 27th in 1500m run with a time of 4:20.97.

Kaleb Burroughs (11-12 male) competing in javelin with a throw of 35.17m received a medal for placing 7th in the nation. He also placed 21st in 3000m run with a time of 10:59.22.

Kamille Cunningham (13-14 female) competing in the high jump with a jump of 1.60m received a medal for placing 7th in the nation.

David Hitch (11-12 male) competing in 1500m racewalk with a time of 10:31.78 received a medal for placing 8th in the nation.

Other competitors included Elijah Hitch (7-8 male) who competed in 2 events – shot put with a throw of 4.94m (33rd) and javelin with a throw of 19.40m (15th); Kaylanna Burroughs (9-10 female) also competed in 2 events – 800m run with a time of 2:49.86 (31st) and 1500m run with a time of 5:52.30 (35th); Brittany Sloan (11-12 female) in 1500m racewalk with a time of 9:09.94  (13th); Alex Small (11-12 male) in 1500m racewalk with a time of 13:05.09 (18th); Hannah Wagner (15-16 female) in 3000m racewalk with a time of 25:39.07 (16th); Winston Stewart (17-18 male) in javelin with a throw of 47.16m (17th); Anthony SantiAnna (15-16 male) in javelin with a throw of 42.81 (17th); and Savannah Jordan (15-16 female) in javelin with a throw of 28.45m (22nd).

All of the athletes of the Florence Track Club competed well against the toughest competition in the nation and should be proud of their accomplishments! Recognition by the City for those who were State Champions, Regional Champions, and All Americans took place on Monday, August 13th at the City/County Complex.  Athletes and coaches were recognized by the City Council for their great 2018 season.
